Satellite images and tracking maps of Severe Tropical Storm Chalane 2020-2021, December 25 - 30. Max wind speed 110km/h.
Chalane is located 37 km (20 nautical miles) north-northwest of Beira, Mozambique, and has tracked westward at 26 km/h (14 knots) over the past 6 hours.
Satellite imagery shows the system has rapidly eroded after it made landfall along the eastern coast of northern Mozambique. The initial position is placed with high confidence based on a defined low level circulation feature in the SSMIS microwave image and triangulated from nearby surface observations.
The initial intensity of 85 km/h (45 knots) is extrapolated from the maximum wind observation from Beira airport of SE/38 knots at 30/03:00 UTC when the TC was within 20 nautical miles.
Chalane will continue to rapidly erode as it drags across the rugged terrain, leading to dissipation in 12 hours after it crosses into Zimbabwe.
This is the final warning on this system by JTWC.
The system will be closely monitored for signs of regeneration.
